Florida Small Business Insurance by Industry

A roofer, a day care and a gas station face different claims, so they need different coverage. Find your industry below, and a licensed agent compares 150+ A-rated carriers for you.

What insurance does a small business need in Florida?

Most small businesses in Florida start with general liability, then add what the law and their industry demand: workers comp from the first employee in construction or the fourth in most other industries, commercial auto for business vehicles and property coverage for the building or the stock. The industry decides the rest: a roofer needs the liability limits its state license requires, a day care needs coverage for the children in its care and a gas station needs coverage for its fuel tanks. We match your industry to the carriers that write it.

Trades Insurance for Electricians, Plumbers and Roofers

Electricians, plumbers, roofers, handymen and tree crews work on other people's property every day. One slip can mean a flooded kitchen, a damaged roof or a hurt neighbor, and many jobs will not let you start without a certificate. Florida also makes licensed roofers and plumbers prove their liability coverage to get and keep a license.

Insurance for ALFs, Day Cares and Care Facilities

Assisted living facilities, adult day centers and child care centers look after people who depend on them. Claims here can involve a resident, a client or a child, so carriers look closely at staffing, training and safety records. We place these risks with carriers that write care facilities every day.

Food Business, Retail and Hospitality Insurance

Restaurants, food trucks, bakeries, grocery and retail stores, gas stations and hotels all open their doors to the public. That brings slip-and-fall claims, spoiled stock after a power outage and storm damage to the building. For many of these businesses, a business owner's policy (BOP) bundles property and liability together.

Staffing, Cleaning, Warehouse and Factory Insurance

Staffing agencies, cleaning companies, warehouses and manufacturers carry risk on the payroll, at client sites and inside their buildings. For staffing and cleaning firms, workers comp is often the biggest line on the bill. Client contracts also tend to ask for higher liability limits, so we quote the whole account together.

Automotive Business Insurance for Dealers and Shops

Auto dealers, body shops and repair garages keep cars on their lots, often customers' cars, and drive them on public roads. A car damaged in your bay or on a test drive is a different claim from a slip in your lobby. Garage liability and garagekeepers coverage are built for exactly that.

Church, Nonprofit and Event Insurance

Churches, nonprofits and event hosts run on volunteers, donations and gatherings. A guest can get hurt at a service or a fundraiser, and a board can be sued over a decision it made. We quote coverage for the building, the people who serve and the event itself.

Common Questions

Small Business Insurance Questions, Answered

How much is small business insurance in Florida?

It depends most on your industry. Carriers price a roofer, a bakery and a staffing agency very differently, even at the same size. Payroll, revenue, vehicles, building values, claims history and the limits your contracts require also move the price. The only real number is a quote on your business, and ours is free.

What is small business insurance, and what does it cover?

Small business insurance is the group of policies that protects a business from claims, losses and legal costs. Most businesses start with general liability. Many add workers comp, commercial property and commercial auto. A business owner's policy, or BOP, bundles liability and property for many small businesses. What you need depends on your industry, your staff, your building and your contracts.

Do I need business insurance if my company is an LLC?

Yes, in most cases. An LLC can protect your personal assets from the company's debts, but it does not pay a claim against the business. Florida law requires workers comp once you have four or more employees in most industries, or one in construction, and auto coverage on the vehicles your business registers. Many clients, landlords and licensing offices also ask for general liability before you start. We quote what your LLC needs, free.

How do I get bonded and insured for a small business?

Insured means you carry the policies your license, your landlord or your clients require, usually starting with general liability. Bonded means a surety bond guarantees your work or your compliance, and you need one only when a license, a permit or a contract calls for it. The licensing office or the contract names the bond and the amount. To get both, send us your license type or contract, and we quote the policy and the bond together.

Are small businesses required to provide health insurance?

Not under federal law if you have fewer than 50 full-time employees, counting full-time equivalents. The Affordable Care Act's employer rule applies only to businesses at 50 or more. Many small businesses still offer a group plan to hire and keep good people, and we quote those plans too.

How do small business owners get health insurance?

There are two main paths. You can buy your own plan on the ACA Marketplace, where your income may qualify you for tax credits. Or your business can offer a small group plan that covers you and your employees. We quote both and explain the difference.

What if my industry is not listed on this page?

Ask us anyway. American US Insurance writes more than 50 commercial lines, and the carriers we work with accept many classes this page does not list, from medical spas to marine contractors. Send the form with a short description of what your business does, and a licensed agent checks which carriers write that class and tells you plainly if none of them do.

Which carriers write insurance for my industry in Florida?

It changes by industry, and that is the point of comparing. One carrier may write restaurants all day and turn down roofers, while another wants contractors and avoids bars. We compare 150+ A-rated carriers and send your business only to the ones that accept your class, then lay the offers side by side so you choose on coverage and price.
