Florida Gas Station Insurance & Fuel Site Coverage
From underground tanks to busy pump islands, Florida fuel sites carry unique risks. We compare gas station insurance across multiple A-rated carriers to fully protect your business.
What exactly does Florida gas station insurance cover?
Gas station insurance is a comprehensive package that covers your fuel pumps, overhead canopies, convenience store property, and standard premises liability. Crucially, to meet Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) regulations, it must also include a specialized underground storage tank (UST) pollution liability policy to cover fuel leaks and environmental cleanup.
What Gas Station Insurance Covers
- A tank or line leak — Cleanup and harm to others from a fuel release. Storage tank pollution coverage pays. General liability usually excludes pollution.
- An injury at the pump island — A customer slips on spilled fuel or trips on a hose. General liability pays medical costs and your defense.
- Wind or fire at the site — A storm tears the canopy, or a fire damages the pumps and the store. Commercial property pays to repair, and business income replaces lost profit while you rebuild.
- Theft and robbery — Cash, lottery tickets and cigarettes are targets. Crime coverage pays for stolen money and stock.
- An employee gets hurt — A cashier strains a back lifting a case, or a clerk is hurt in a robbery. Workers comp pays medical care and part of lost wages.
Storage Tank Insurance Rules for Florida Gas Stations
| What the rules require | What it means for your station |
|---|---|
| Owners and operators of petroleum underground tanks must show they can pay for a release: $1 million per occurrence at fuel retail sites, and $1 million a year in total for 1 to 100 tanks (40 CFR 280.93) | A storage tank liability policy from a qualified insurer is one accepted way to meet it (40 CFR 280.97). |
| Florida enforces tank financial responsibility through its own rules, for underground tanks over 110 gallons and aboveground tanks over 550 gallons (Rules 62-761.420 and 62-762.421, F.A.C.) | Inspectors ask to see your proof. Keep the tank certificate current and on file. |
| Stations within half a mile of an interstate or a designated evacuation route, with 16 or more fueling positions in counties of 300,000 or more people, must be prewired with a transfer switch to run on a generator (§ 526.143(3)(a), Florida Statutes) | The rule requires the wiring, not a generator you own. Smaller counties have lower position counts. |
| Workers comp once the business has four or more employees (§ 440.02(20)(b), Florida Statutes) | Part-time cashiers count toward the four (§ 440.02(18)). |
These are the rules' minimums, not a quote. Coverage, eligibility and pricing vary by carrier and by your tanks, pumps and store.
Gas Stations and Fuel Sites We Insure
Single-location stations
Owner-run sites with a few pumps and a small store.
Stations with convenience stores
Fuel plus a full store, some with food service or beer and wine sales. A store with no pumps is written on its own, as our retail store insurance page explains.
Truck stops and travel centers
Diesel lanes, big lots and traffic around the clock.
Multi-site operators
Several stations on one program, with tanks and stores listed site by site.

Who writes gas station insurance in Miami and across Florida?
American US Insurance is an independent, bilingual insurance agency headquartered in Kendall that places coverage for fuel sites across Florida. Being independent lets us compare multiple A-rated carriers and work for the station owner, not for one insurer. That matters for gas stations, because only some carriers write fuel sites and their rules on tank age and type differ. We write gas station insurance in Miami and across Florida for single stations, stations with stores, truck stops and multi-site owners. We handle the whole file, from the first quote to the tank certificate.
