Florida Auto Body Shop & Garagekeepers Insurance
A customer car in your bay is your liability. We compare body shop insurance in Florida, including garagekeepers and general liability, across multiple A-rated carriers.
What insurance does an auto body shop need in Florida?
A Florida body shop needs two things most other businesses do not. The first is garagekeepers coverage, which pays for damage to customers' vehicles while they are in your care, custody or control — the single largest uninsured exposure most shops carry, because a general liability policy excludes exactly that property. The second is liability for the repair work itself, including the comeback claim where a repair is blamed for a later loss. Around those sit the ordinary pieces: property and equipment, business interruption, and workers compensation for the technicians. No Florida statute requires garagekeepers coverage — the demand comes from your landlord, your lienholders and the dealers and insurers who send you work — and that is precisely why shops are found underinsured on it. We compare auto body shop insurance coverage across multiple A-rated carriers.
Auto Body Shop Insurance for Customer Vehicles
- The loss happens on your floor — A unit is scratched moving between bays, a lift is misused, a bay floods, or a finished car is stolen off the lot overnight. The customer's own policy is not the first answer. The vehicle was in your care.
- Your garagekeepers limit is tested, not your liability limit — General liability excludes property in your care, custody or control. Garagekeepers is the coverage written for it. The limit is the most it will pay for all the vehicles at risk at once.
- The form decides who has to be at fault — Legal liability pays only when the shop is shown to be responsible. Direct primary pays for the damage regardless of fault. It is the form that keeps a customer relationship intact.
- The rest lands on the shop — Whatever the limit does not reach comes out of the business. A single overnight fire or theft can involve more customer vehicles than a shop's limit was ever sized for.
Garage Liability vs Garagekeepers Coverage
Garage liability
Covers harm your shop causes to other people and their property. That means a customer injured on your premises, or a vehicle you are operating that hits someone. It is the coverage a Florida dealer licence is tied to. Our auto dealer page covers that requirement in detail.
Garagekeepers
Covers damage to your customers' vehicles while they are in your care, custody or control. Garage liability and general liability both exclude that property. This is the body shop's coverage. It is written as legal liability, direct primary or direct excess. The difference between those three is the difference between a covered claim and an argument.
Shops that also hold a dealer licence, or that sell the occasional unit, need both. Most shops need garagekeepers far more than they expect. Most carry less of it than they should.
Auto Body Shop Insurance Coverage
Garagekeepers coverage
Customers' vehicles in your care. The limit should cover the busiest night of your year, not an average day. Mechanic shops that hold cars overnight face the same exposure, as our auto repair shop insurance page explains.
Property and equipment
The building or tenant improvements, the frame machine, the spray booth, the lifts and the paint stock. Booths and mixing rooms are rated on their own.
Business interruption
Income while the shop cannot take work after a fire, a storm or an equipment failure. Florida shops price this against hurricane downtime specifically.
Workers compensation
Technicians work with lifts, chemicals and grinders. This is the line that pays for their injuries. Florida requires it of most shops with employees.
What You Need for a Body Shop Insurance Quote
- Maximum number of customer vehicles on your property at one time, indoors and out.
- The highest value vehicle you take in, and whether you handle exotics or classics.
- Square footage, whether you own or lease, and whether you have a spray booth.
- Employee count and payroll by role, for the workers compensation piece.
Who insures auto body shops in Florida?
American US Insurance is an independent, bilingual insurance agency in Miami that places coverage for Florida repair and collision shops. Because we are independent, we compare multiple A-rated carriers rather than representing one, and on shop business that matters: carriers differ sharply on spray booths, vehicle values, lot security and prior theft losses, and a shop declined by one carrier is routinely written by another at a workable rate. We write garagekeepers, garage liability, property, business interruption and workers compensation for shops from single-bay operations to multi-bay collision centers, and we handle the whole file.
