Florida Church Insurance for Religious Organizations
From Sunday services to youth groups and transport vans, Florida church insurance protects your entire congregation. We compare coverage across multiple A-rated carriers.
What insurance does a church need in Florida?
Church insurance usually combines general liability, property coverage for the building, and protection for the people who serve: abuse and molestation coverage, professional liability for counseling, and directors and officers coverage for the board. Churches with four or more employees need workers comp (§ 440.02(20)(b)2., Florida Statutes), and volunteers are not employees under that law. Church vans need commercial auto. We compare church insurance across multiple A-rated carriers.
Church Insurance Coverage, Claim by Claim
Four calls a church office dreads, and the coverage that answers each one.
The situation
A visitor trips on the sanctuary steps after a Sunday service and breaks a wrist.
What responds
General liability pays for the injury claim and for your defense, up to your limit.
The situation
A parent says a volunteer acted inappropriately with a child at a youth event.
What responds
Abuse and molestation coverage answers the claim when the church has added it. Many liability policies leave it out.
The situation
A hurricane tears part of the roof off the fellowship hall.
What responds
Commercial property pays for the repair after the wind deductible. Read that deductible before storm season.
The situation
A volunteer driver backs the church van into a parked car on a youth trip.
What responds
Commercial auto answers the damage. List every regular driver, volunteers included.
Church Liability Insurance: Covered and Not Covered
A church liability policy answers for the people on your property. It leaves some losses to other coverage.
What the policy pays for
- Injuries to members, visitors and guests on church property.
- Injuries at church events held somewhere else, such as a retreat or a picnic.
- Damage the congregation causes to someone else's property.
- Your legal defense when someone sues the church.
What it leaves to other coverage
- Abuse and molestation claims, unless the church adds that coverage.
- Counseling that goes wrong, which needs professional liability for clergy.
- Board decisions, which need directors and officers coverage.
- Injuries to church employees, which workers comp answers.
Florida Church Insurance Requirements
No Florida statute sets an insurance requirement for a church. These rules still shape the coverage your board buys.
| Rule | What it means for your church |
|---|---|
| A volunteer is not an employee under Florida's workers comp law (§ 440.02(18)(d)6., Florida Statutes) | If a volunteer gets hurt serving, workers comp will not respond. Volunteer accident coverage can. |
| Workers comp is required once a church has four or more employees (§ 440.02(20)(b)2., Florida Statutes) | Paid staff count toward the four, from the office to the nursery. |
| A volunteer who acts in good faith is shielded from personal liability, and the nonprofit organization answers instead (§ 768.1355, Florida Statutes) | The claim lands on the church, so the church carries the liability policy. |
| A preschool or child care program that is part of a church can be exempt from licensing, yet it must still meet background screening and safety standards (§ 402.316(1), Florida Statutes) | Exempt does not mean uninsured. Our daycare insurance page explains the program's own coverage. |
These rules shape what your board buys. Treat them as background, not as legal advice or a quote.
Gather These Before a Church Insurance Quote
- Your average attendance and the number of services each week.
- Your paid staff, your volunteers and the ministries that work with children.
- Your buildings, with their age, roof and type of construction.
- Your vans or buses, and who drives them.
- Any school, preschool or daycare the church runs, and your claims from the last five years.
Is religious organization insurance available through a Kendall agency?
Yes. American US Insurance places religious organization insurance from its Kendall office for churches, ministries and other houses of worship across Miami-Dade. One church insurance application can list the sanctuary, the fellowship hall, youth ministries and the church vans, so they are quoted as one package. Then we walk your board through each offer, line by line. Congregations in Miami, Hialeah, Westchester and Homestead end up with coverage that fits how they serve.
