Florida Autonomous & Self-Driving Fleet Insurance Quotes
Florida treats the driving system as the vehicle operator. Your insurance must sit securely behind that technology. We compare multiple A-rated carriers for your self-driving fleet.
What is autonomous vehicle insurance in Florida?
Autonomous vehicle insurance is the coverage behind a vehicle whose automated driving system does the driving. Florida lets a fully autonomous vehicle run with or without a person inside and treats the system as the operator (§ 316.85). A fully autonomous vehicle on an on-demand network or on a prearranged ride must carry at least $1 million of primary liability, with personal injury protection and uninsured motorist coverage (§ 627.749). The owner, the network or both can carry it. We compare autonomous fleet coverage across multiple A-rated carriers.
Florida Autonomous Vehicle Insurance Requirements
Section 627.749 sets one floor for driverless rides on a network. Everything else is left to your contracts and your carrier.
The statute fixes
- Primary liability of at least $1 million while a fully autonomous vehicle is logged on to a network or on a prearranged ride.
- Personal injury protection at the statutory minimum, and uninsured motorist coverage.
- That the owner, the network or both may carry the coverage.
- That the driving system counts as the operator, so no human driver is required (§ 316.85).
The statute leaves open
- Damage to the vehicle, its sensors and its computers.
- Trips outside a network or a prearranged ride, where the $1 million rule does not apply.
- How a software failure or a cyber attack is insured.
- Who bears the loss, the owner or the network, when both are involved in a claim.
Who Needs Autonomous Fleet Insurance
Four kinds of operator put driverless vehicles on Florida roads, and each one carries the risk in a different way.
Robotaxi and on-demand networks
A company that dispatches driverless vehicles to riders runs an on-demand autonomous vehicle network. It follows the transportation network company rules, except those written only for human drivers, and it must meet § 627.749.
Fleet owners that lease to a network
An owner can place vehicles on someone else's network. The owner, the network or both can carry the required coverage, and the lease should say which.
Shuttle and delivery operators
A driverless shuttle or delivery vehicle faces the same road risk. The contract with the city, campus or customer often sets the limit.
Remote-supervised fleets
Florida allows a vehicle to be operated from a remote center when it meets § 319.145. The remote staff and their systems add exposures a regular fleet does not have.
Autonomous Fleet Claims Florida Operators Face
Four losses that come from the machine instead of the driver, and the coverage that answers each one.
The situation
A driverless shuttle fails to yield and hits a cyclist at a crossing.
What responds
Auto liability pays the cyclist's medical bills and your defense, up to the policy limit.
The situation
A sensor fault sends a vehicle into a parked truck at night.
What responds
Liability pays the truck owner, and physical damage pays for your vehicle if you bought it. The carrier may then recover from the sensor's maker.
The situation
A software update misreads lane markings and a vehicle clips a guardrail.
What responds
Auto liability and physical damage answer first. Cyber or technology coverage may respond to the failure behind the crash, depending on how it is written.
The situation
A rider is hurt when the vehicle brakes hard to avoid a crash.
What responds
The ride-phase liability that § 627.749 requires, up to its limit, and the personal injury protection that goes with it.
Have This Ready for Your Autonomous Fleet Quote
- Your vehicle list with year, make, model and VIN, and the version of the driving system on each one.
- Where and when the vehicles run: the service area, the hours and the top speeds.
- How the vehicles are used, such as network rides, shuttle runs or deliveries, and who owns each one.
- Any contract with a network, a city or a customer that names a limit.
- Your safety record: miles driven, incident reports and loss runs.
Do insurance companies cover autonomous car fleets in Florida?
Yes, some do, and each one underwrites a driverless fleet case by case. Florida law already sets a $1 million floor for a fully autonomous vehicle on a network, so the real question is which carrier will write it and on what terms. As an independent agency in Kendall, American US Insurance shops autonomous vehicle insurance on your vehicles, operating area, safety record and network contract. We then explain what each offer adds above the floor, so a fleet in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Orlando or Tampa buys with the full picture.
