Is There a Grace Period for Late Car Insurance Payments?

Florida law does not give drivers a grace period for late car insurance payments, so each insurance company sets its own rules. The law does protect you in one way: before your insurer cancels an auto policy for nonpayment, it must send you at least 10 days' notice.

If you pay before that notice period ends, your coverage usually continues without a gap. If you get a cancellation notice, call your insurance company right away, and call us if you need help finding its billing line.

Common Questions

Insurance Payment Questions

Can you pay car insurance with a credit card?

Yes. Most insurance companies take credit and debit cards online or by phone, and many also accept bank transfers. Some charge a small fee for card payments, and a few ask for a bank account to set up autopay. Check your carrier's payment page in the directory above to see which methods it accepts.

What happens if you miss a car insurance payment?

Your insurance company sends a notice that it will cancel your policy unless you pay by a set date. If the policy cancels, you are driving without insurance. In Florida, that can lead to a suspended driver license and registration, and getting them back costs a reinstatement fee of up to $500. A gap in coverage can also raise the price of your next policy.

How do I reinstate my car insurance after it lapses?

Call your insurance company first. Many will reinstate a policy if you pay the past-due amount soon after it cancels, sometimes with a short gap in coverage. If yours will not, buy a new policy before you drive again and keep proof of insurance in the car. Call us, and we will compare carriers for your new policy.

Is there a grace period for health insurance payments?

Yes. If you have a Marketplace plan with a premium tax credit, you usually get a 3-month grace period, as long as you paid at least one full month that year. Without the tax credit, the grace period is usually shorter and follows your insurer's rules and state law. Pay before it ends to keep your plan. Our Obamacare page explains how we help you enroll.

Does my escrow account pay my homeowners insurance?

Yes, if your mortgage includes escrow. Your lender collects part of the yearly premium with each mortgage payment and pays your insurance company when the bill is due. The policy is still yours, so check that each renewal was paid and tell your lender if you switch carriers.

How do you pay for car insurance each month?

Pick a monthly payment plan with your insurance company, then pay each bill online, by phone or with autopay from a card or bank account. Many carriers add a small installment fee that you avoid by paying the full term up front. Your first payment is usually due on the day the policy starts.

Can American US Insurance help me lower my insurance payment?

Yes. We compare prices from over 150 A-rated carriers for auto, home, health and business insurance, review the discounts you qualify for today and check that every credit available to you is applied. You see each quote side by side and decide whether to switch.

Can American US Insurance help if my insurance payment fails?

Yes. Call your insurance company's billing line first; the directory on this page lists it for most carriers. If you cannot find it or you got a cancellation notice, call us at (800) 868-9170. A licensed agent will find the right billing line, explain your options and help you keep your coverage active.
