How to File an Insurance Claim in Florida
Find your carrier below, call its claims line or report the loss online, and use Florida's deadlines to protect your payout. American US Insurance clients get an agent's help at every step.
How do you make a claim on your insurance policy?
Report the loss to your insurance company as soon as you can, by its claims line, app or online form, with your policy number ready. Photograph the damage, prevent further damage, keep receipts and meet the adjuster. The carrier assigns the claim number and the adjuster, and your agent can help you through each step.
Steps to Report a Car, Home or Business Claim
- Get safe first. Call 911 if anyone is hurt, and after a car crash ask the police for the report number.
- Document everything: photos and video of the damage, the other driver's name, plate and insurer, and any witness contacts.
- Report the claim to your carrier using the directory below, with your policy number and the date, time and place of the loss.
- Prevent more damage, such as tarping a roof or shutting off water, and keep every receipt. Your policy expects reasonable steps to protect the property.
- Meet the adjuster, keep a log of every call and email, and call us if the claim stalls.

What to Do After a Car Accident in Florida
Florida's no-fault system shapes the first days after a crash. Your own personal injury protection, or PIP, pays first for your injuries, up to $10,000 in medical and disability benefits, no matter who caused the accident.
To keep those benefits, get initial medical care within 14 days of the crash. If a doctor does not find an emergency medical condition, PIP pays up to $2,500. Report the crash to your carrier promptly, even if the other driver offers to pay.
Fault decides who pays for vehicle damage and for injury claims above PIP, which is why photos, witness names and the police report matter. Our auto insurance page explains each Florida coverage.
How Long Do You Have to File an Insurance Claim?
For home and other property claims, Florida law sets firm deadlines. Notice of a new or reopened claim must reach your insurer within 1 year of the date of loss, and notice of a supplemental claim within 18 months.
The insurer has deadlines too. It must acknowledge your claim within 7 days, begin its investigation within 7 days of receiving proof of loss and pay or deny the claim within 60 days of notice.
Auto policies call for prompt notice rather than a fixed number of days, and PIP benefits depend on the 14-day treatment rule. Waiting rarely helps: evidence fades and repair costs climb.
