Life Insurance for Seniors in Florida: Your Options by Age

Can seniors still buy life insurance in Florida?
Yes. Many carriers issue term life insurance into the mid-70s, whole life and final expense policies into the 80s, and guaranteed issue policies with no health questions, often up to age 85. The options narrow and the price rises with each birthday, so the age you apply at matters as much as the type of policy you choose.
Life insurance for seniors works differently than it does for a 35-year-old. The goal often changes, from replacing an income to covering final expenses, paying off a mortgage or leaving something for children and grandchildren. The choices change too. Some policies stop accepting applicants at certain ages, and prices climb with every birthday. Here is how senior life insurance works in Florida and which options fit at each stage.
Life Insurance for Seniors Over 60: What Changes
Three things shift as you get older:
- Price. Age is the biggest factor in what a life insurance policy costs, so the same coverage is priced higher each year you wait.
- Health questions. Carriers look more closely at conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and a history of cancer. Some ask for an exam, while others rely on a phone interview and a check of medical and prescription records.
- Available terms. Long terms, such as 30 years, usually stop being offered by your 60s. Shorter terms of 10 or 15 years remain available longer.
In your 60s, you still have the widest choice. Term, whole life and universal life are all available, and good health can still earn a strong rating class.
Term Life Insurance for Seniors
Term life insurance covers you for a set number of years. It is usually the lowest-cost way to buy a large amount of coverage, which makes it a good fit if you still have a mortgage, a spouse who depends on your income or business debts to cover.
Many carriers issue term life insurance for seniors into their mid-70s, typically with terms of 10, 15 or 20 years. The catch is that coverage ends when the term does. If you outlive it, the policy pays nothing, and buying a new one at an older age costs more. Some term policies can be converted to permanent coverage without a new medical exam, which is worth asking about before you buy.
Whole Life Insurance for Seniors
Whole life insurance lasts your entire life as long as the premiums are paid. The premium stays level, and the policy builds cash value you can borrow against. It costs more than term for the same death benefit, so seniors usually buy smaller amounts, enough to cover funeral costs, medical bills or a gift to heirs. Many seniors over 70 move toward whole life or guaranteed universal life to make sure the coverage lasts. Our life insurance page compares term, whole life and final expense side by side. Guaranteed Issue Life Insurance and Its Waiting Period
Guaranteed issue life insurance, sometimes called guaranteed acceptance, asks no health questions and cannot turn you down within its eligible ages, often up to about 85. Coverage amounts are small, and most policies have a two-year waiting period before the full benefit applies to deaths from natural causes. Because of that waiting period, it makes sense to apply for a policy with health questions first and keep guaranteed issue as the fallback.
Burial Insurance for Seniors
Burial insurance is a small whole life policy sized for funeral, burial and final bills. It usually involves a few health questions and no exam, so approval is quick, and the benefit goes straight to your beneficiary to spend as needed. It is a practical choice when the goal is to keep those costs from falling on your children.
Life Insurance for Seniors Over 80
Options narrow after 80. Some carriers still issue small whole life and final expense policies into the mid-80s, and guaranteed issue remains available up to its age limit. Expect lower coverage amounts and a closer look at your health. Term policies of any meaningful size are rarely available at this age.
Buying Life Insurance for Elderly Parents
Adult children often shop for life insurance for elderly parents to cover funeral costs or a final medical bill. You can own the policy and pay the premiums, but two rules apply. You must have an insurable interest, which a child generally has in a parent. Your parent must also know about the policy, agree to it and sign the application. Since your parent answers the health questions, plan the conversation together. Our guide on how much life insurance a Florida family needs can help you settle on an amount.
